Tarragon: Instant Messaging (Shrimp2)

More immediate than e-mail, less disruptive than other messaging products, Shrimp2 provides instant messaging that uses your network rather than the Internet

Unlike some products, Shrimp2 doesn't depend upon an Internet connection. Instead, the Shrimp2 server (the 'Postroom') can reside on a Windows PC within your own network which means it doesn't provide another opportunity for hackers and snoopers.

Shrimp2 is a communications medium for workgroups. Based around the login name of users on the network, Shrimp2 allows messages to be instantly sent between those users. The message text is displayed, in full, on the recipient's screen but, importantly, this doesn't interfere with or remove the focus from the user's current application.

Sending messages (Shrimplets) with Shrimp2 is simplicity itself - just check the names of the recipients, type the message, hit "send". Shrimp2 shows you which users are connected, which are not connected and which are connected but not currently using their PC.

You can schedule Shrimplets to be sent at a specified time and, if you have Shrimp2me installed, the full scheduling power of that product is available to distribute reminders and notices to your staff on a regular basis.

When a Shrimplet is received, it appears as a banner at the top of the screen - the colours and typeface are customisable! Just click on the banner and it disappears, but your copy of Shrimp2 keeps a log of Shrimplets received (and sent) so that you can reshow them at any time.

If a Shrimplet includes a web link, you can follow the link with a single mouse-click. Received Shrimplets can also be replied to and forwarded, to any or many Shrimp2 users. They may also be deferred for redisplay at a later time of your choosing.

Shrimp2 requirements:

Shrimp2 runs on a Windows NT/2k/2003/XP Server network or Windows 9x/2k peer-to-peer network and requires Windows 9x/NT/2k/XP on a 486 or above processor, at least 8Mb RAM and just 2.5Mb disk space on a shared folder somewhere on the network. All PCs using Shrimp must have TCP/IP installed. If necessary, the VB6 runtime library will be installed by the easy installation process.
